Spreeinsel Berlin
Urban development plan for the 'Capital Berlin'
International ideas competition
Between the ‚modern' centres Potsdamerplatz and Alexanderplatz, in the context of masterpieces of Prussian architects as well as GDR icons, and employing the means of the 'critical urban reconstruction', the project proposes a cultured nucleus of the new capital city. The suggested strategy is to integrate the majority of the existing fabric into perimeter blocks and - where necessary - to create new blocks. The resulting formal collisions lead to exciting episodes within the traditional pattern of the Berlin fabric. The base of the cleared Palazzo Prozzo is to mutate to a metropolitan world stage and the light beacon of the government library, towering above the general Berlin eaves height, is to function as a monumental bookmark in the city centre.
