Art Museum, Leipzig
Urban concept
New building with gallery spaces, changing exhibition, library, cafeteria, administration, meeting rooms
International project competition
In line with the municipal master plan, the lateral road courses are completed with rows of private housing. The resulting urban concourse is dedicated to cultural events. The museum, its future extension, the old stock exchange and clusters of trees are conceived as solitary objects within it. The historical geometry of the former perimeter is redrawn by the entrance front of the museum. Thus it evokes local history in its form, and in its function as a museum. The museum ground floor, is conceived as generously laid out urban foyer. Contained within it, are a cafeteria, the children's museum, a shop and the changing exhibition space. A large staircase leads the visitor to the mezzanine floor, with graphics cabinets, library, administration rooms, and finally to the gallery floor with permanent exhibition areas. The conclusion of the museum route is the inside of the entrance wall: it is gridded and divided into areas (evoking the old walls of the former rooms) which are embellished by contemporary artists.
